The Moscow Moose is a refreshing and unique twist on the classic Moscow Mule. This cocktail is for when you’re in the mood to enjoy the zesty flavor of ginger, combined with rye whiskey, a touch of vibrant citrus and a little sweetness.

While the Mule recipe consists of vodka, ginger beer, and lime juice, the Moscow Moose swaps the vodka for rye and the lime juice for grapefruit or lemon juice. Then it adds a tiny amount of amaretto, but it makes all the difference.

What’s In It?

This drink features several ingredients.

  • Rye Whiskey: this type of whiskey is distinctive because it tends to have a slightly more spicy or peppery flavor than most. This is because of the high percentage of rye grain used in its production. Good brands for cocktails include Bulleit, Rittenhouse, Sazerac and WhistlePig. But most any good brand will taste great in cocktails, so use what you like!
  • Amaretto: this liqueur tastes something like cherries and almonds, and it’s sublime. Try Disaronno Originale, Luxardo or Bols.
  • Grapefruit or Lemon juice: fresh squeezed is worth it.
  • Ginger Beer: if you’ve never had ginger beer, think ginger ale with more spice and a more robust flavor. Fever-Tree is a favorite, along with Bundaberg and Gosling.

Serving Suggestions

This is a terrific drink for summertime barbecues and outdoor gatherings because the copper mug keeps the ice and drink cold.

It’s also great for an end-of-week happy hour, a cocktail party, or any occasion.

  1. Copper Mug: Serve your Moscow Moose cocktail in an iconic copper mug. Not only does it keep your drink chilled, but it also adds a touch of sophistication to your presentation.
  2. Fresh Herbs: Garnish your cocktail with a sprig of fresh mint or rosemary for an aromatic twist. Lightly clap the herbs between your palms before adding them to release their fragrant oils.
  3. Citrus Zest: Enhance the citrusy notes by gently zesting a lemon or grapefruit peel over your drink. The oils released from the zest will add an extra burst of aroma and flavor.
