The Bewitching Black Magic Margarita

How about an exciting spooky fall margarita for your next gathering? The Black Magic Margarita has a mesmerizing black hue, thanks to a few drops of food coloring added to the usual margarita ingredients.

Despite the spooky appearance, this margarita is just as delicious as the classic Margarita. With a balance of tart lime, smooth tequila, and a hint of orange liqueur, it’s a cocktail your guests will be sure to love.

It’s a great to serve if you’re hosting a Halloween party! But it’s just as good for simply adding a little extra flair to your next happy hour.

What Makes It Special

This really is a basic margarita recipe, but what makes it special is the black food coloring, black salt for the rim and the dehydrated blood orange slice garnish. You can absolutely use a lime if you prefer – the pop of green looks terrific with the black!

It’s simplest to buy black margarita salt. But you can also make it yourself with activated charcoal.

You can also replace the food coloring with activated charcoal powder if you prefer. I didn’t take that route because it can prevent the absorption of some medicines, which could be an issue for some of your guests.

Tips for Getting That Deep Black Color

I recommend using gel food coloring because it gives a richer black with fewer drops than liquid. Start with 2–3 drops, shake, then add more if needed.

If the drink looks gray, add a tiny splash (1–2 teaspoons) of pomegranate juice or a few drops of black cherry juice. Either of these will darken the hue without tipping the flavor too much.

And definitely use a clear silver tequila and clear orange liqueur (like Cointreau or a clear triple sec). If your spirits are amber or reddish, they’re going to shift the color.

Flavor Twists That Keep It Spooky

There are quite a few things you can do to change up the flavor if you want.

  • Use mezcal for half the tequila to add a subtle smokiness.
  • Muddle 3–4 blackberries in the shaker before adding ice. This adds a dark berry hue and gentle sweetness.
  • Mix your black salt with a little Tajín for a salty-sour-spicy rim. This option’s great with mezcal.
  • Swap in 1/4 ounce of fresh grapefruit juice and 1/2 ounce of lime (instead of 1 ounce lime) for a softer citrus bite.

Make a Pitcher for a Party

Batching keeps you out of bartender jail during the party. Before we get to the recipe for one drink at a time, here’s a big batch version:

For 8 drinks:

  • 16 oz silver tequila
  • 8 oz fresh lime juice
  • 6 oz Cointreau or triple sec
  • Large pinch of salt
  • Gel black food coloring to taste (start with 8–10 drops, then adjust)

Stir everything (except ice) in a pitcher and chill at least 2 hours. When ready to serve, add a big handful of ice to the pitcher and stir again, or shake individual portions with ice for the best froth. Garnish each glass as you go so the salt rim stays neat.

Pro tip: Add the coloring a little at a time after chilling. Cold liquids sometimes look lighter, so check the hue once it’s cold and adjust.

Fresh Juice vs. Bottled

Fresh lime juice is the difference between “fine” and “wow.” If you need to prep ahead, just juice your limes the morning of the party and store the juice in a sealed jar in the fridge.

And if they seem too tart, you can add 1/4 ounce of agave syrup to the juice. It’ll take off that sour edge without turning it sweet.

Alternative Garnishes That Look Amazing

I love the dehydrated blood orange slices for this. They look dessicated yet beautiful, which is perfect for the spooky effect.

But as I mentioned, you can definitely use a lime slice or wedge, since the bright green looks beautiful. You can also skewer a few blackberries for color and a tiny pop of sweetness.

And you could also use smoked rosemary: light a sprig, blow out, and rest it on the rim for a campfire vibe (especially nice if you’re using mezcal).
