Apple Cinnamon Whiskey Smash
The Apple Cinnamon Whiskey Smash cocktail is a delicious fall drink that’s easy to make at home. It combined the flavors of crisp apple flavors with spicy cinnamon and smooth whiskey for a cozy seasonal treat.

This smash is also forgiving. You can use cider or juice, swap sweeteners, and even skip muddling if you’re short on time. It still comes out great, which makes it perfect for entertaining or a quick nightcap.
Why This Drink Works
Apple, cinnamon, and whiskey love each other. The apple brings juicy brightness, cinnamon gives warm spice, and whiskey adds a smooth backbone. Together, it tastes like a cozy fall afternoon without being heavy or fussy.
It’s also flexible. You can switch the sweetener, use cider or juice, and pick your favorite whiskey style. Even if you skip the muddling step, you’ll still get a balanced, flavorful drink.
Ingredient Notes and Smart Swaps
Cinnamon Whiskey
This recipe calls for a cinnamon whiskey. I like both Jack Daniels Fire and Fireball cinnamon whiskey for this one. Fireball is sweeter and more cinnamon-forward, which makes the drink both spicier and sweeter.
If you want less sweetness and more whiskey character, try a cinnamon-infused bourbon or rye. You can even make your own cinnamon whiskey by steeping cinnamon sticks in a standard bourbon for 3–5 days, then straining.
Apple Juice vs. Apple Cider
Fresh, unfiltered cider brings extra body, natural tartness, and a little cloudiness that looks great in the glass. Clear apple juice is lighter, brighter, and lets the whiskey shine more.
If you go with apple juice, you may want to dial back the maple syrup slightly to keep it snappy.
Maple Syrup and Other Sweeteners
Maple syrup has flavor whereas simple syrup doesn’t. And it’s a good flavor in this drink. Grade A amber is a good all-purpose pick.
Honey works too,. Brown sugar simple syrup (1:1 brown sugar and hot water) gives it a caramel note that’s amazing. Just shake really well to get everything mixed.
And if you prefer a drier drink, cut the sweetener to 1/4 oz. Or leave it out completely – it’s your call!
Fresh Apple for Muddling
A couple of thin slices of apple add aroma and a gentle apple flavor. If your apple is super tart, the drink will be brighter. If it’s a sweet variety like Gala, it’ll be sweeter.
Thyme or Mint
I included an herb to add some brightness to the cocktail, but they’re optional. Mint is the classic option for a smash, but thyme adds a really nice lemony flavor.
Muddling, Shaking and Straining
This drink calls for muddling – optionally – and it’s important to do it just right. Shaking and straining is also important in this one.
Muddle Gently
You can actually skip the muddling step if you want. Just shaking the apple pieces and herbs with the rest of the cocktail will release plenty of flavor, and it would be better than over-muddling it.
If you do muddle, press just enough to release oils and juice. Over-muddling can make the drink cloudy with small fibers. One or two light presses is perfect.
Shake Hard and Strain Well
Shake for a full 10–15 seconds so the syrup integrates and the drink chills properly. A fine mesh strain keeps bits of apple and herb out and gives you a silky texture.
Batch It for a Crowd
This drink is a hit at fall parties, and batching makes hosting easier. For 8 drinks, mix in a pitcher:
- 16 oz cinnamon whiskey
- 8 oz apple cider or juice
- 4 oz maple syrup
Chill the pitcher for at least an hour. When you’re ready to serve, stir, pour into glasses over fresh ice, and garnish.
If you want a fresher aroma, muddle a few apple slices in the pitcher right before serving, then fine strain as you pour.
Garnish Ideas
A cinnamon stick gives aroma with every sip. A thin apple fan or crescent adds a crisp bite between sips. An orange peel expressed over the top adds citrus oils that cut the sweetness.
If you’re feeling fancy, dust the apple slice lightly with cinnamon sugar or torch a cinnamon stick for a second to release smoke.
