Antoine’s Lullaby Drink Recipe

Pinterest Hidden ImagePinterest Hidden Image

Antoine’s Lullaby is a rum-based cocktail that’s so deliciously low on the sweetness scale that you have to serve it in a sugar-rimmed glass. It has a bold flavor – rum and lemon juice, with touches of fruitiness from the port and curacao.

It looks like it would be hard to make, with its reddish color and sugar rim, but it’s really not. We’ve got a whole tutorial with video on how to make the sugar rim.

What It Tastes Like

The first thing I notice is the molasses flavor of the dark rum. But the lemon juice quickly balances that sweetness.

The port and orange curacao are used very sparingly, but they make all the difference. The port adds light raisin or berry notes while the curacao adds a little bit of citrus zip and just a hint of bitter orange peel.

Without the sugar rim, the drink could be a little too tart. If you don’t want to bother with it, add a small amount of simple syrup, stir, taste, and add more if needed.

When to Serve

Antoine’s Lullaby works well as an aperitif before dinner. In the evening it suits cooler nights when you want something rich, but not quite a heavy digestif.

The sugar rim gives it a festive look, so it’s great for cocktail parties and holiday gatherings. It’s also nice for small gatherings or intimate date nights.

Equipment & Glassware

This is a drink that’s stirred, not shaken. So you’ll need a mixing glass, or any good-sized tumbler from your kitchen. A bar spoon is great for mixing, but you can get by with a regular spoon too.

For straining, a julep or Hawthorne strainer is all you need to keep the ice from pouring into the glass. And a citrus juicer and peeler are all you need to squeeze the lemon and make a nice lemon twist garnish, if you want.

When you make the sugar rim, you can use a saucer or a salt rimmer designed for cocktails. They’re not expensive and make a nice addition to your home bar.

Serve this one in a chilled coupe or any elegant looking glass. I used a stemless martini glass here.
