Skittles Vodka Tutorial

Infusing vodka with Skittles is a very popular trend right now. There are a couple of different ways to do it. My way involves separating all the Skittles into their separate flavors and making five different bottles of Skittles vodka.

For this project, you’ll need:

  • One 1.75 liter bottle of vodka (I used Stoli – you don’t need the most expensive vodka, but do avoid the cheap ones)
  • Five 8.5 ounce flasks or bottles (I got mine from The Container Store (get 8% cash back through Ebates)- here’s a very similar one from Amazon, and another that looks like a retro milk jug. For a Halloween party, serve these neon-colored concoctions in test tube shooter glasses.)
  • One 1 pound bag of Skittles
  • Five empty plastic water bottles
  • A funnel
  • Bowls for separating the Skittles into flavors
  • A measuring cup (not pictured)
  • Coffee filters or paper towels

You’ll also want to cover your workspace with newspaper or freezer paper – this infusion can get messy. If you’re making a different sized batch, here’s the formula you need to know: I used 60 Skittles to 6 ounces of vodka, which yields about 8 ounces of infused vodka. If you want to make 1.5 times that, or 3 times that, just multiply your amounts.

Step 1: Separate Skittles into Flavors

Start by simply separating the Skittles into flavors. You want 60 of each.
separating

Step 2: Setting up your Infusion Bottles

Fill your water bottles with 6 ounces of vodka each. It doesn’t need to be exact – you can always even it out later by pouring in a bit more vodka to the ones that come out with less.

Step 3: Add the Skittles

Pour the Skittles of one flavor into one infusion bottle, then pour the next flavor of Skittles into the next infusion bottle, and so on until all five bottles have a pile of Skittles soaking in the vodka.

You could certainly be more sophisticated than I was here, and use a funnel to pour the Skittles of each flavor into one of the bottles. The reason I did it this way was that I felt it would be orangeeasier to wash each flavor of Skittles off my hands before moving onto the next one than it than to get that flavor out of the funnel each time – that plastic tends to hold onto the flavors, skin doesn’t.

Step 4: Shake ‘em, shake ‘em, shake ‘em

shakingNow your infusion bottles all have Skittles in the bottom. Give each bottle a good shake – the more, the better. In my picture here, you can see that the colored candy coating has already rubbed off into the vodka, but the white insides of the Skittles still have a lot of dissolving to do. After shaking them, set them aside for a few hours. It’s a good idea to shake them again then, especially if you’re making a bigger batch. My Skittles all dissolved overnight.

Once they’re all dissolved, you’ll notice a lot of white muck floating at the top. We’ll take care of this in Step 6.

infusion

Step 5: Strain

funnelandcupThere are a number of ways to strain this stuff and get all the white gunk out. Some people prefer paper towels, but I used coffee filters and found they worked just as well. I put a funnel inside a measuring cup.

coffeefiltersThen I put four coffee filters in the funnel. It’s hard to say exactly how many you’ll need, since not all coffee filters are exactly the same. I’ll tell you one thing I did learn, though: orange and green needed more filtration than the others. I discovered this when I thought I was finished, and found a little bit of white stuff still floating in those two flavors. No problem, though: I just strained them again through one more coffee filter, and that took care of it. So if you find you haven’t strained it thoroughly enough, the good news is: you can always fix that later.

pouringThen I poured one of the infusions into my strainer setup. I had to pour about a quarter of my infusion in, then wait for some of it to soak through, then pour another quarter in, until I was done. (If the strainer clogs with white gunk, use a spoon to scrape the white gunk out of the way.) In the end, you’ll have about 8 ounces of Skittle infused vodka. Then I dumped the funnel and coffee filters into one of the bowls I’d used earlier for counting out Skittles, to catch drips as I carried it over to the sink. I washed everything out for re-using (except the coffee filters, of course – those I just rinsed before disposing of, so the sugar wouldn’t attract ants).

intobottle Then I took the liquid from the measuring cup and poured it into a flask, via the now-clean funnel. You can see here that the green is a little thick, and it shouldn’t have been – that’s why I ended up having to re-filter it. Then I rinsed the funnel out again.

Repeat this process for each flavor.

Here you can see about how much gunk the filtration takes out:

Step 6: Chill and Serve

Now you’ve got 5 flasks or bottles of Skittles infused vodka:

flasks

Stick them in the freezer for several hours – overnight is fabulous…

freezer

…and they’re ready to serve:

chilled

Now, these are pretty strong on their own – nearly pure vodka. They are also very sweet. You can drink them straight, served up in a chilled martini glass, or you can use them in a cocktail:

  • Mix them with ginger ale, 7-up or Sprite to taste
  • Mix them with cola to taste (diet cola cuts the sweetness a little)
  • Serve them on the rocks to water it down a little
  • Some people mix them with fruit juice. I didn’t try this, because to me the Skittles were plenty of sweetness for my taste buds.
  • Everyone’s taste varies – there are so many directions you can take this drink in, you really should try anything that sounds good to you!

Cheers!

Can I put the skittles into tea bags to avoid the hassle with the white muck, or is it a not so good idea?

Jen

You can definitely try it and see. Let us know how it turns out!

Have you tested the shelf life? I know most home infused vodkas shouldn’t be consumed beyond 30 days or so, but that’s typically with fresh fruit. I assume candy wouldn’t be subject to most of the same concerns. Have you let any of it sit for a while and then drank it? Does the flavor deteriorate?

Reply

Kiersten

How long did it take to strain? I’m doing it right now, and it’s taking forever, drop at a time. And it doesn’t seem like this is actually going to make 8oz in the end.

really good this! im going to do it tonight actually! only problem is i wouldnt put vodka into plastic containers because the vodka eats away at the plastic so the longer u leave it in the more plastic tht goes into ur drink! eventually it would eat through the whole bottle

I just wanted to add, I tried this for the first time last night. i followed your formula for the 10 skittles per ounce and made a larger batch. Mine did not dissolve overnight. However, I just put them in a blender this morning. So it took care of that….. Then, I poured it onto a paper towel over a bowl, I then pulled each corner of the paper towel together and GENTLY began squeezing all the way to the bottom. (Be careful when squeezing, if not the gunk will put a hole in your paper towel and cause it to get into your ‘syrup’. I think this is a faster way to make it. And it turned out great! Especially if you don’t have time to wait overnight. :) Anyway, thanks for this tutorial. We are attending an all adult party tonight, and thought this would be fun for everyone to try.

Oh and if your going to use the ‘squeeze’ method, wear latex gloves. The dye will stain your hands! I did orange first, and now have orange hands. :)

Does vodka really eat a hole in plastic?! I noticed that most vodkas are in plastic containers when you buy it?!

Reply

bugme143

@Sherry it doesn’t really “eat” at plastic, it just absorbs the plastic flavor, and some of the chemicals.

Trying this tonight, instead of water bottles we used actual liquar bottles, and instead of vodka using Everclear. ;) Hopefully it will work out. :D

This turned out AWESOME with Everclear liquar. :) Strawberry with strawberry sunkiss soda is awesome! :) Grapeco and grape is pretty good too. :D

but if you put them in the freezer….will they freeze er no?
just asking cause the skiddles might have a side effect on them? rofl..

Reply

as anyone knows vodka is still vodka no matter wat u put in it. i would say that it all depends on how well it is infused, but then again the process of freezing is an unforgiving one. though its well infused it may still be separated or worse.. completely frozen because its so well infused haha its a gamble depending on how you make it i guess lol sry for the rambling ha just puttin sum things out there for ppl to ponder on =)

A friend of mine has some Japanese vodka (not mixed with anything) that partially freezes. I don’t know what the Japanese (or manufacturers of said vodka) put in their vodka but I’ve seen vodka freeze. Sorry, I cannot recall the brand name of it.

Try mixing the blue and green together, it’s what I did and personally I found it to taste great! Trust me, it’s awesome.

Thanks!

Oooooh… What about Hot Tamales or Lemon Heads? Yummmm! I’m on that!

Reply

I would imagine that the sour patch kids will just absorb the liquor. At parties, I use to soak gummy bears in various liquors and they would swell up. Mind you, I would use Malibu or other liquor that was only 30-35%

Reply

omg these look sooo good! looks delish and deadly cuz they seem sooo yummy and addictive :)

Has any one ever tried Skittles and malt liqueur mixed together? You will not regret it…Its delicious!

Fantastic! my girl loves cinnamon and we discovered something along the same lines with red hots. basically, a bottle of vodka, pour in cinnamon red hots to taste, (they disolve, no filtering required). If you want more cinnamon flavor add a dash of extract from any grocery store. place contents in freezer. Great for shots, or with various classic vodka drinks when a cinnamon accent is desired. Cheers

YazJohnstone

Do ya think it would work with fruit pastels? :D

Nope, they’d just swell up. You would have pretty delicious alcoholic candy though!

I’m curious, what would happen if you then mix the finish product with coke? Will it explode? XD

Reply

Josh

No, I think you’re thinking about mentos and coke, not skittles and coke.

Reply

Jamie

I just made 3 bottles of the stuff had a bit of trouble with the coffee filters but had some cheesecloth that I used to filter it and worked great.

Reply

James

which are the nicest flavours? cause im guessing not all of them are nice?

Reply

Jen

Actually, it tastes pretty much like the Skittles candies, so it’s whichever flavor you like best.

Reply

James

okay thanks, i just heard that green isn’t that nice when the person actually likes the green skittles.

Reply

Jen

Hmm. Well, I’m not wild about the green Skittles, and to me it tasted the same. Maybe to someone who liked them, it would be disappointing.

If I had to guess, I think you’d be safest with the red and purple ones.

Reply

John

I found that the yellow was the best flavor of vodka even though I hate yellow skittles, and green was probably the worst (favorite skittle)…they were all pretty good though, i just thought green might be better.

Reply

Yazz

Maybe with a bit of soda would be good..Better than lemonade i think, no extra sweetness

Reply

denis

Hey which vodka works best?

Reply

Jen

Any vodka that feels smooth when drunk straight up will work. Smirfnoff and Svedka are both good, as is Kettle One. (I wouldn’t spend a lot on this, though – good vodka should be saved for cocktails!)

Reply

Angeleyez

Love the colors… making my first batch… waiting for all the skittles to dissolve… will be back tomorrow…

Reply

Steve

I tried skittles the first time with great result, second time around I made it with Mentos. Worked just as fine. Maybe not as pretty colors but the flavors works (my favorite is watermelon).

I’ve been making this for awhile. I find I get invited to a lot of parties and they always want my skittles vodka…oh well..lol…when it comes to filtering…the best thing I found that works is a coffee filter from a mini coffee pot. The ones that don’t need the paper filter. It’s the just the mini pot filter baskets….they are way efficient and fast….just fyi

Reply

James Watkins (clinical psychologist)

Cheese cloth works WAY better than paper towels OR coffee filters. You can squeeze it, and it doesn’t break. Also, if you break the skittles up with a mace before you start the infusion, it’s much faster.

Reply

Josh

I’ve been making skittle vodka since before this site but i just thought i’d check to see how others were doing! Using a tea strainer then a filter is so much better – more work but ends up being quicker. Also, if you crush the skittles or chop them in half etc, you get a better taste which is so good, hint of lemon/lime/strawb/grape/orange!! more gunk but i think its worth it!

Someone asked how long these drinks last, and, more importantly, said fruit infused drinks go bad after thirty days.
I am sorry, but that is dead wrong. Most fruit infused drinks, you need to infuse for several months. My cherry bounce(cherries, sugar, Bourbon, and spices), plum brandy(plums, sugar, spices, brandy), and blackberry vodka(blackberries, sugar, vodka, lemon zest) are all waiting three months before straining, and my limoncello and raspberry gin get six months. All except the blackberry(it gets woody) would improve with more time a year or more.

Both sugar and alcohol are preservatives, and there are no doubt more fancy preservatives in the skittles. It should be safe for years, though it might possibly separate

Reply

jackson

Sorry, typing on nook.
It might separate after a few years. It could also be affected by too much sunlight. Sunlight can bleach hair, bones, wood, etc, it does worse to liquids in solution.

Reply

Becca

Can you do the same with any other clear alcohol, (i.e. rum, tequila)?

Reply

Jen

I’m not sure about that, Ben. I don’t think it’ll work with water. It might work with lemonade, but I’m thinking soda water (sometimes called club soda) might be your best bet. I think the carbonation might dissolve the Skittles.

Reply

Heather

I’m in the process of making skittles vodka right now! I bought the same exact bottles shown above at The Container Store for $4 ea. The vodka I chose is Svedka can not wait to try them tomorrow night. Its way faster to dissolve the skittles when you constantly shake the bottles. I poured the skittles in two hours ago and they are almost gone.

Reply

Clinton

We used to drop jolly ranchers into Zimas and I would if it would work just as well with vodka. There wasn’t anything to filter out and they dissolved completely.

Reply

Brandi

Making it right now using Wild Berry Skittles. Bought super cheap vodka (Vladi for $11/handle) figuring the skittles would mask it. Generally I’m a Pinnacle person. I also didn’t measure anything. I just bought a couple of the movie theater size bags (the medium ones), a handle, and then split my handle equally among the 5 water bottles. We’ll see how it goes.
