It’s time again for childhood and adulthood to collide in a most delicious way! You can infuse vodka with Jolly Rancher candies, much the same way we make Skittles Vodka. Actually, this process is much easier, and the results are fabulous: tasty and gorgeous to look at. You can whip up batches of five Jolly Ranchers Vodka flavors in only twelve to fourteen hours with minimal labor on your part, so they make wonderful, affordable, memorable gifts, too.

The Materials:

I bought more than I actually needed: a 1.75 liter bottle of vodka and a 3.75 pound bag of Jolly Ranchers. With this, I could easily have made two batches (that is, two flasks in each Jolly Ranchers flavor) and still have had a bit left.
Here’s what you actually need:
A regular 750 milliliter bottle of vodka. A liter of vodka (see comment here). You may have to buy a 1.75 liter bottle to get it. No need to spend much on the vodka – just choose one that goes down reasonably smoothly, for minimal interference with the intense Jolly Rancher flavor. I used Svedka, and it was very nice.- 12 Jolly ranchers in each flavor you want to infuse (that’s 60 Jolly ranchers all together). The 3.75 pound bag I bought had at least 40 of each flavor, so a couple of pounds of assorted Jolly Ranchers ought to do it.
- Five flasks to pour it in. (Amazon – they hold 8.5 ounces, which is a nice amount.
- Optional: a funnel to assist with pouring the vodka into the narrow necks on the flasks.
- Optional: something like a plastic sheet or newspaper over your counter, because little bits of Jolly Rancher fall out of the wrappers and stick to everything.

Step 1: Sort the Jolly Ranchers
Separate your Jolly Ranchers by color/flavor.
That’s watermelon, apple and cherry in front, with grape and blue raspberry in the back. As you can see, you don’t necessarily get equal numbers of every flavor in an assortment bag. I got more of the grape than any other flavor, and less of blue raspberry. But even with the blue raspberry, I had more than enough to do the whole experiment twice.
Step 2: Put Jolly Ranchers in flasks
Put twelve Jolly Ranchers of each flavor into each flask. Yes, you can put them directly into the flask instead of into a mixing container. The reason? Because you’re not going to have to skim anything out of it, like you do with waxy candies like Skittles. Every bit of the Jolly Ranchers – which are mostly corn syrup, sugar, flavorings and colors – belongs in the final product here. And that’s why this process is so much easier than a lot of candy infusions.
Once you’re done, you should have five flasks with beautiful colored candies in the bottom.

Step 3: Pour the vodka
Next up, you pour the vodka into the flasks over the candies. Stick a funnel (optional) into the neck of each flask, and pour your vodka down it. I filled mine to the top of the neck.

As you can see, they start taking on the color of the vodka immediately, as it begins breaking down the candies. There’s no need to shake them or anything – just let them sit for about eight to twelve hours, and all the candy will dissolve completely with no mess, and nothing stuck to the glass.
Your almost finished product will look like this:
I had been worried that the watermelon and cherry would come out too close to the same color. But as the picture here shows, the cherry is a nice deep red and the watermelon comes out a lighter red – sort of a coral, or a cross between pink and orange. Even next to each other, they don’t look like the same color.
Step 4: Chill!
Put your flasks into the freezer and let them chill for a couple of hours. Now they’re really ready for use.

What you have in your flasks now is nearly pure vodka, so they’re very strong on the alcohol. The flavors are exactly what you’d expect: at first, you just taste the Jolly Ranchers in liquid form, exactly like the candies always tasted. Then the vodka kicks in with its characteristic flavorless burn. You can definitely drink these straight up as flavored martinis or shooters, and they’re a lot of fun.
You could also mix them into some cocktails:
- Make a Raspberry Kamikaze with Blue Raspberry Jolly Ranchers Vodka in place of the chambord. You’ll end up with a blue cocktail instead of a deep red one, but the taste is very similar and fantastic.
- Replace the vodka in a Tokyo Iced Tea with Apple Jolly Ranchers Vodka. It’ll go nicely with the kiwi liqueur.
- Try a Grape Russian Tea with Grape Jolly Ranchers Vodka instead of the grape schnapps.
- Replace the grenadine in a German Cherry Bomb with Cherry Jolly Ranchers Vodka. It makes for a chocolate covered cherry sort of flavor.
- Make a Love Bite with Cherry Jolly Ranchers Vodka in place of cherry liqueur, except on top of the other layers instead of at the bottom.
- Make a Laffy Taffy, but with Watermelon, Apple and Raspberry Jolly Ranchers Vodka instead of the schnapps and DeKuypers the recipe calls for.
- Mix any of the flavors with some mineral/soda water or 7-up or Sprite.
- A touch of Rose’s Lime contrasts nicely with the Watermelon, Grape, Blue Raspberry or Cherry.
- You can definitely serve these over ice or simply water them down a little if the straight vodka’s too strong, but you don’t want to dilute the flavor with another flavor.
Cheers!

Does this work with Sugar Free Jolly Ranchers?
I sure hope so, cause I was wondering the same thing. . . sugar plus Alcohol KILLS my stomach for some reason{on the floor in SERIOUS PAIN for about 15 mins. Please, if anyone knows, reply. I can’t see any reason it wouldn’t work though.
I also can’t see any reason it wouldn’t work. The sugar free ones melt in your mouth just like the sugared ones, so it ought to melt in vodka, too.
Has anyone tried the sugarfree jolly ranchers yet? I’m interested in knowing how that would turn out
I tried the sugar-free and they work beautifully! I put 15 instead of 12 but my friend liked it with 12.
try taking a tums when it happens
Nick,
I posted this for Jim but it was meant for you!
If the pain feels like you need to pass gas or anything related, you need to have your pancreas checked out immediately. Most people find out way too late. Seriously, don’t make an appointment…go see your doctor today and demand a pancreatic enzyme workup and a ct scan, MRI, or pet scan TODAY!!!
I’ll surely try this out.
Thanks for the great post
That is probably deadly. I can see it not tasting like liquor at all.
definitely trying these!! where did you find the clear flasks??
Try a craft store or a store that sells kitchen supplies
You can find the flasks on amazon, the link for them is in the skittles vodka Tutorial
It’s also in this tutorial! I put it in every tutorial where I use them, and still people ask me where they can find them!
Do these need to be refridgerated? What’s the shelf life? Awesome idea! Thanks!
This question has come up before. I’ve never left them more than a week before consuming, but since none of the ingredients seem likely to go bad quickly, we’ve *guessed* that it ought to stay okay for at least a month, maybe longer. We can’t promise that, it just seems to make sense.
For the same reason, I don’t think they *need* refrigeration. I do suggest chilling before serving, though – I think it tastes better.
Vodka does not go bad, in fact with most alcohols, they tend to get stronger with age. These won’t go bad, its just like having a bottle of vodka in your liquor cabinet 3 years ago and just using it. Vodka already has a large amount of sugar in it, adding more sugar (jolly ranchers) won’t change it.
Don’t worry about shelf life, it won’t go bad. Also putting it in the freezer and then back into warm won’t make it go bad either.
However, I highly recommend the freezer at least 4-6 hours before consuming, it tastes great cold.
Vodka won’t go bad, but it won’t get stronger with age. Vodka is basically ethanol and water, no sugar. Alcohol evaporates more easily than the water, so if anything, if the container isn’t air-tight the drink will get less strong with age.
turn it upside down…
I can’t believe that these two staples of my diet – candy and vodka – had never entered my stomach at the same time in this fashion.
I started making some in the 17.5oz containers with ~24 candies each. After 14 hours they were only about halfway dissolved – the same amount they had dissolved after about 8 hours. It seems as though in larger volumes and with skinnier containers they concoction does have to be stirred or shaken. The partially dissolved goo forms a barrier preventing additional vodka from breaking down the remaining candy.
Otherwise – I am really looking forward to forgetting this coming Saturday.
i am gonna try to make that jolly rancher drink wit vodka its gnna taste soooo good!
Trying my hand at this. Haven’t even finished making them and they’re already huge hit on Facebook. In any case, mine have sat for almost 24 hours, and the candy’s not entirely dissolved. Depending on the flasks, they’re about 50-80% dissolved. I dunno if it’s due to environmental factors or whatnot (being close to sea level, high heat and humidity), but the liquid has colored nicely.
Haven’t tasted it yet as I want to wait a but more for all the candy to dissolve, but I’m thinking you could get away with using half the candies the recipe calls for. Any thoughts?
This may be due to the type of vodka your using. Highly alcohol content means it will dissolve faster.
Also the more jolly ranchers are closer together the longer it will take.
Keep in mind you can shake it, it won’t hurt or change it. If its taking a while, every 4 hours or so I would simply take it and tip it upside down and then back.
Also the more vodka the jolly ranchers are exposed to the faster, if you have a tight cap on the lid, try laying the bottle down on its side, this will increase the surface area the vodka will be able to get to the jolly ranchers.
how do jolly rancher fruit chews taste in vodka?
Slight problem. The liquified jolly ranchers don’t mix properly with the vodka when you freeze them. The starch and sugar didn’t mix properly and it seems they individually froze leaving almost nothing but vodka. However, mixing lemon solved it I think. Still tasted a lot more vodka than I wanted it to be, but great for shots I guess.
Hmm, I never encountered that problem. Weird!
You need to do this before, The jolly ranchers need to be completely dissolved in the vodka at room temperature before putting them in the freezer. By putting them in the freezer before fully dissolved your slowing down the reaction point.
Try a vodka with a high alcohol content ( Smirnoff 100 Proof) 50% alcohol, and will go down smoothly with jolly ranchers as well.
Don’t cheap out, as you will regret it.
we wanted to try everclear 190proof and it did absolutly nothing to the jolly ranchers…they wouldnt even disolve weird..
we did do vodka also and its so yummy
Has anyone tried this using Life Savers instead? I don’t have any Jolly Janchers but my kids got a TON of LIfer Savers for christmas…..I want to make the stuff tonight but I hate driving 30 minutes to the store just for Jolly Ranchers. I guess I might try making one flavor and see how it turns out. I’ll let y’all know!
Brandy, I think Lifesavers have a waxy coating (it’s been a long time, going by memory), so you may need to strain the final mix a little to get some white gunk out. But otherwise, I think it should work just fine (and the straining shouldn’t be that hard, not like Skittles vodka).
I made a it with absolute vodka with about 2 watermelon jolly ranchers per oz and it was waaay to sweet, maybe less jolly ranchers.
I’m gonna try this with UV Cake and cinnamon Jolly Ranchers. Wish me luck.
UV Cake might be the most disgusting alcohol on the market. Good luck.
I love Jolly Ranchers and vodka, but I add ice, jolly ranchers and vodka and mix it in the blender. Its the best!!! My friends all enjoy them and nobody seems to make them better than I can. So I have actually been invited to parties to make them and end up getting tips and more invites…
can you do this in a water bottle???
I just put six watermelon Jolly Ranchers in a 375ml bottle. I’m very excited to see the outcome tomorrow night when I go clubbing with my friends! Pre-drinking before we go out with this stuff should be great! My favourite flavour is watermelon, but I only had six, so let’s pray it works out!! I don’t like too sweet of things anyway!
Oh, and I used Smirnoff.
Could I use regular 9 oz water cup glasses to make this drink?
So I have water bottles that I’m going to use for a party.. My bottles are 20Fl Oz. So how much vodka do I want?? Would it be better to use vodka or rum?? And also how many candies should I use??
Thanks!!
Can’t do math?
I was wondering where did you find the bottles to make it in
Worked perfectly! Made a blue, red, and green one in decorative glass containers from the arts and crafts section from Wal-Mart (I’m guessing… vases?)
They look like a mana, health, and stamina potion in their respective containers and each mix amazing with sprite of 7-up for a lovely drink. You can easily get 4 shots in there without even tasting the poison.
Great idea. Will make again.
Would it be okay to use water bottles instead of glass flasks? I am but a broke college student. The less I have to spend the better
The plastic could flavor the vodka, but sure, give it a try – some posters say it won’t. Some people have found Mason jars super-cheap, so there may be other glass options that are less expensive than the flasks if you don’t want to take the risk.
I found a set of 6 different 8 oz metal flasks for $15 on amazon, i’m a proke college kid too but that works for me
Just go to the dollar store. They sell all kinds of stuff like this.
This is such a genius idea! I would love to try this out, and I love how the candy colors the vodka – so fun for a party!
Just finished making this. I cannot wait to try it! I used 16oz Mason Jars, with 20-24 candies a piece depending on how many I had. The 1.75L bottle of Svedka worked out perfectly, so I’m thinking that the 750ml bottle would be just about right when using 8oz bottles. Thanks for the lovely idea!!
where can i find jolly ranchers in au.:(
Those look delicious, could use a shot right now. Reminds me of the ABSINTHE this camp makes at Burning Man. They also use Vodka but they infuse it with wormwood and have a ton of ridiculous flavors (coffee, taragon, various traditional mint variations, chilli peppers), and that drink also involves quite a bit of sugar should you so desire. Conclusion? JOLLY RANCHER FLAVORED ABSINTHE MADE WITH VODKA!
Best source I have found for the glass flasks is glasswarehouse.org. You have to buy by the case, but I got 12 of the 8 oz flasks for $39! Even with shipping, it averaged $4 each.
Thanks for the great post! Made a double batch last night and can’t wait to try it!
Awesome Idea can’t wait to try it
can you do the same thing using another type of clear liquer like tiqulea
I used Tequila and Green Apple flavored Jolly Ranchers. Apple was probably the best choice, given that it is closest in flavor to agave sap, as well as the strongest flavor of Jolly Rancher, so that it can power past the tequila flavor. It worked great. However I think that any other flavor wouldn’t taste quite so good with it. I also used Cherry with some Baccardi, which tasted pretty good, though not quite as good as the Tequila did. The Cherry rum did mesh well with some Cherry Dr. Pepper though.
works very well. you gotta mix up the flavors of the jolly ranchers tho. preferably Three Olives Flavored + jolly ranchers. Drop them down in the bottle, let it dissolve, and it taste great.
Do you think you could make butterscotch the same way?
Just another option for mixing it: Jolly Rancher actually has sodas that are in all of the original flavors. I’ve found that the watermelon mixes well with Smirnoff Watermelon, so I’m guessing it’d be even better with Jolly Rancher flavored vodka…Though I’ve only been able to find the sodas at a few stores.
Will it affect the outcome if I do it in a plastic bottle as opposed to the glass flask?
can i just put the jolly ranchers into the vodka bottle and let it dissolve like that?
Sure!
How many candies would I use if I had a 375ml bottle?
I stumbled upon this recipe at 2 am while looking for the green apple jolly rancher mixed drink, and I was pleasently surprised. I am both proud and ashamed to admit I had to rush right out to walmart to get the supplies. I can’t wait to try it! thanks!
I used Blueberry Vodka and added Blue Raspberry Jolly Ranchers.. AMAZING! We took shots with them, and just added a hint of sweet and sour mix, they were amazing! It was somewhat on the whim that I decided to try this and all I had were SOLO cups, but they worked fine and the candies dissolved faster because I could stir the mixture every so often. We’re trying Cherry next.
How do I divide 1.75 liters evenly for 5 bottles (One for each flavor)
Where did you get the glass flasks?! I really like those!
There’s an Amazon link in the post. Follow it, and then you might want to search around a little, because the Amazon sellers keep changing prices and shipping and all that.
love the recipe sounds great!
I am trying this right now using skyy vodka ! Can’t wait to taste the result.
Has anyone tried to mix flavored?? For example, blue raspberry & watermelon? I have a random amount of candy-thought I would give it a try!! Stay tuned!
You could always make each flavor separately, and then try a small amount of them mixed to see if it’s good! That way, you wouldn’t waste any if it tastes bad.
Would Mason jars work? i have a bunch from a sail and i have washed them. the flasks are just a little too pricey for to try it, but i REEEAAALLLYYY want to make them.
Thanks!
Sure, any kind of glass container will work for storage. You may have to use a funnel or something for pouring form the mason jars, but that’s no big deal.
Lol this just as I am giving up vodka, maybe I’ll give it up next year!
I must admit jolly rancher vodka is definitely delicious!! BUT!!! a word of caution, i made a batch and it was in a glass bottle and the candies once diluted built pressure inside the bottle which caused it to shatter – i would recommend using smaller plastic type bottles to avoid any injuries like i got
That’s actually not possible – the candies don’t change in volume. Something else must have caused your glass container to shatter! Many of us have been using glass containers without incident for lots of infusions like this.
So would you serve these rite after you took them out of the freezer?
does anyone know if this will work with tequila also? im not a very big vodka drinker i would like to try it with tequila but dont want to waste a bottle of it if it wont work!
So after reading this page and the Skittles vodka page before this one, I have come to the conclusion that most people are idiots. The same questions keep coming around. Plastic bottles? Where to find the flasks? Etc… If you read thru the Q&A’s you will get your answer much faster then waiting for some one to respond to it. My question was answered with only reading less than halfway through the comments. It was about using Everclear. I am a big fan of the stuff and thought it would be great to use it; stronger alcohol: faster dissolve-ment. Or so I thought.
Anyway thank you Jen for your great sounding recipes. I look forward to trying both Skittles and Jolly Ranchers. I think I will also try Warheads candy. On a small scale first though.
Again thank you!!!
which did you like better to drink the skittle or jolly rancher? and did u really use 8.5 oz flasks?
Why do you have chill them?
great idea I think. My father like to drink Votka
