It’s time again for childhood and adulthood to collide in a most delicious way! You can infuse vodka with Jolly Rancher candies, much the same way we make Skittles Vodka. Actually, this process is much easier, and the results are fabulous: tasty and gorgeous to look at. You can whip up batches of five Jolly Ranchers Vodka flavors in only twelve to fourteen hours with minimal labor on your part, so they make wonderful, affordable, memorable gifts, too.

The Materials:

I bought more than I actually needed: a 1.75 liter bottle of vodka and a 3.75 pound bag of Jolly Ranchers. With this, I could easily have made two batches (that is, two flasks in each Jolly Ranchers flavor) and still have had a bit left.
Here’s what you actually need:
A regular 750 milliliter bottle of vodka. A liter of vodka (see comment here). You may have to buy a 1.75 liter bottle to get it. No need to spend much on the vodka – just choose one that goes down reasonably smoothly, for minimal interference with the intense Jolly Rancher flavor. I used Svedka, and it was very nice.- 12 Jolly ranchers in each flavor you want to infuse (that’s 60 Jolly ranchers all together). The 3.75 pound bag I bought had at least 40 of each flavor, so a couple of pounds of assorted Jolly Ranchers ought to do it.
- Five flasks to pour it in. (Amazon – they hold 8.5 ounces, which is a nice amount.
- Optional: a funnel to assist with pouring the vodka into the narrow necks on the flasks.
- Optional: something like a plastic sheet or newspaper over your counter, because little bits of Jolly Rancher fall out of the wrappers and stick to everything.

Step 1: Sort the Jolly Ranchers
Separate your Jolly Ranchers by color/flavor.
That’s watermelon, apple and cherry in front, with grape and blue raspberry in the back. As you can see, you don’t necessarily get equal numbers of every flavor in an assortment bag. I got more of the grape than any other flavor, and less of blue raspberry. But even with the blue raspberry, I had more than enough to do the whole experiment twice.
Step 2: Put Jolly Ranchers in flasks
Put twelve Jolly Ranchers of each flavor into each flask. Yes, you can put them directly into the flask instead of into a mixing container. The reason? Because you’re not going to have to skim anything out of it, like you do with waxy candies like Skittles. Every bit of the Jolly Ranchers – which are mostly corn syrup, sugar, flavorings and colors – belongs in the final product here. And that’s why this process is so much easier than a lot of candy infusions.
Once you’re done, you should have five flasks with beautiful colored candies in the bottom.

Step 3: Pour the vodka
Next up, you pour the vodka into the flasks over the candies. Stick a funnel (optional) into the neck of each flask, and pour your vodka down it. I filled mine to the top of the neck.

As you can see, they start taking on the color of the vodka immediately, as it begins breaking down the candies. There’s no need to shake them or anything – just let them sit for about eight to twelve hours, and all the candy will dissolve completely with no mess, and nothing stuck to the glass.
Your almost finished product will look like this:
I had been worried that the watermelon and cherry would come out too close to the same color. But as the picture here shows, the cherry is a nice deep red and the watermelon comes out a lighter red – sort of a coral, or a cross between pink and orange. Even next to each other, they don’t look like the same color.
Step 4: Chill!
Put your flasks into the freezer and let them chill for a couple of hours. Now they’re really ready for use.

What you have in your flasks now is nearly pure vodka, so they’re very strong on the alcohol. The flavors are exactly what you’d expect: at first, you just taste the Jolly Ranchers in liquid form, exactly like the candies always tasted. Then the vodka kicks in with its characteristic flavorless burn. You can definitely drink these straight up as flavored martinis or shooters, and they’re a lot of fun.
You could also mix them into some cocktails:
- Make a Raspberry Kamikaze with Blue Raspberry Jolly Ranchers Vodka in place of the chambord. You’ll end up with a blue cocktail instead of a deep red one, but the taste is very similar and fantastic.
- Replace the vodka in a Tokyo Iced Tea with Apple Jolly Ranchers Vodka. It’ll go nicely with the kiwi liqueur.
- Try a Grape Russian Tea with Grape Jolly Ranchers Vodka instead of the grape schnapps.
- Replace the grenadine in a German Cherry Bomb with Cherry Jolly Ranchers Vodka. It makes for a chocolate covered cherry sort of flavor.
- Make a Love Bite with Cherry Jolly Ranchers Vodka in place of cherry liqueur, except on top of the other layers instead of at the bottom.
- Make a Laffy Taffy, but with Watermelon, Apple and Raspberry Jolly Ranchers Vodka instead of the schnapps and DeKuypers the recipe calls for.
- Mix any of the flavors with some mineral/soda water or 7-up or Sprite.
- A touch of Rose’s Lime contrasts nicely with the Watermelon, Grape, Blue Raspberry or Cherry.
- You can definitely serve these over ice or simply water them down a little if the straight vodka’s too strong, but you don’t want to dilute the flavor with another flavor.
Cheers!
Mix That Drink Kitschy Drink Recipes

Here’s my contribution to the article:
Tip 1: Crush the candies; they dissolve faster that way.
Tip 2: Shake the bottle every 15 minutes. It will cut your dissolve time in half, regardless of if the candies are crushed or not.
Tip 3: The jolly ranchers, once dissolved, don’t add much to the volume of the alcohol, so your “proof” doesn’t go down by much. Be careful with these.
Tip 4: ***USE RUM INSTEAD***. Seriously, the vodka is good and all, but rum lends itself better to the sweetness of the candies, IMO. Like, seriously. Go do it now (if you’re of the legal age n your area).
I saw your comment on LifeHacker. I think these are great ideas. I may try the rum infusion next!
I found both this post and the original skittle post through Lifehacker. I like how Lifehacker goes from telling you how to build a hackintosh, to how to install a electrical outlet safe, to how to get deliciously drunk.
Also, I use about 8 jolly ranchers per 8 ounces when I make it, and that makes the rum take in a lot of flavor. I’ll try 12 next, but that almost seems over the top to me. But who knows? I do really like Jolly Ranchers and Bacardi.
Oh, nevermind. The added candies are probably to help offset the bite of the vodka. Thats where I went wrong when I did this myself. Hmm, so do I do a higher-candied vodka, or rum next? Both?
If I do this one again, I’ll try 8 candies – the flavor was very intense. But I think I have to try your rum next.
Has anyone tried this with grain/corn liquor?
I used Taaka vodka but the Fruit Punch Flavor and i mixed cherry and Watermelon together and Cherry and then I did one with just blue Raspberry. Yummy!
i use 2 candy’s per oz and it works out great
Jen dont forget to post how it goes with rum! this is a great idea, I tried the one with skittles and it turn out perfect and delicicious. thanks for a new idea
Awesome! Can’t wait to try it. Just curious though – I worry the rubber on the tops of those flasks may freeze and crack if one were to keep those flasks in the freezer. Any problems with that?
Amy, I haven’t had any trouble with mine. I don’t generally keep mine in there for more than a few days at a time, though.
If you’re worried about the plastic/rubber cracking just add a drop of flavorless oil and smear it around. You don’t want it gummy…just a barrier.
Honey
Thanks to my friend and neighbor Mark, I have done this with fresh fruit off the vine. Black raspberries are best, through regular raspberries and strawberries are good, too.
In parts:
1 part sugar
2 parts fruit
3 parts vodka
You can go easier on the sugar if you like, especially if you’re using a sweet fruit, like peach.
Shake lightly to mix it all up. Put in a dark room-temperature place, like a closet or cupboard, for at least a month, if not two.
Strain the liquid through a cloth into another container and store again until ready to use. You can freeze it if you like, but the longer you let it sit unfrozen the more mellow it gets.
Enjoy!
when mixing the fruit and sugar, are you cooking it at all, or just mixing and putting in a sealed bottle in the dark? i wondered if the fruit spoiled at all, or if the sugar and alcohol kept it in consumable condition.
All the steps are in the article.
I wonder how the same technique would work with Brach’s hard butterscotch discs? Should dissolve about the same as a Jolly Rancher, I’d think…
Maybe I’ll give that a try soon!
it works out ok, but they dont have the intense flavor of jolly ranchers. i have used the butterscotch disks in capt. morgans and it works GREAT!!!!!!! better than buttershots. i used about 14 candy per 8 oz. once again its wonderful
This sounds awesome. I read about the skittles, but this sounds better – the flavors more appealing and they are gorgeous!
I actually did this today. You need more than 750 milliliter bottle of vodka. I bought the exact same bottles as the ones you used here. 750 mls was only enough to fill up 4 of the 5 bottles; looks like you need a whole liter of vodka to fill all of the bottles.
Okay, good to know. I’ll correct the article.
These look…incredible! I hope you don’t mind if I try it myself, and write about it with a link back to your original post?
What a great idea!
Sure, that’s what it’s all about!
So, I attempted this last night. Finished assembling them about 8pm. It’s now 2:50 pm the following day, and the Jolly Ranchers still haven’t dissolved. Am I doing something wrong?
That’s weird. I can’t imagine what’s wrong. I did shake mine a few times, but I know other people who haven’t, and they always dissolve within 12 hours. What kind of vodka did you use? Are the flasks capped so there’s no air getting in? And are they plain Jolly Ranchers (as opposed to sugar-free, or another brand or something)? Not that I really think any of those things would be a problem, I’m just trying to come up with something.
It took about 36 hours, but it did finally work.
The vodka might be fully saturated already.
That’s a good point. Joshua, you might want to taste the vodka, and if it’s flavorful enough, just not worry about the undissolved candy. If you want to remove them, you could strain the infused vodka into another container.
I did this last night and used Voss glass water bottles since I could get them for cheap at Marshalls (simply poured the water into a separate container and stuck in in the fridge). Since the bottles were a bit bigger (375ml each) and I love Jolly Ranchers, I used more candies per glass (about 20). They turned out great but some of the candies are still in the process of dissolving even after 14 hours. Shaking the bottles every few hours helped to break down the candies more and they taste great!
Another suggestions from LifeHacker was to crush the candies to make them dissolve faster. If yours are already soaking in there, maybe you can reach into the bottle with something and crush up the remains.
So did you fill the water bottle up with the vodka or how much did you put in there??
Definitely going to be trying this. I was going to try the Skittle infusion but these look much more appealing, and easier.
I wonder how it would be with a vodka like Grey Goose.
Should be amazing!
I made two batches. In one batch, I used 8.5 oz flasks (same ones you used) and made skittle infused Smirnoff vodka. In another batch, I used a whole handle of Bacardi Rum, and filled 5 17 oz flasks and dissolved 16 Jolly ranchers in each of them. After 8 hours, they had all dissolved. However, after sampling them, I found the blue raspberry, cherry, and watermelon flavors to be a little weak on flavor and smell, so I added about 6 jolly rancher candies to each one. I also made a 34 oz bottle of smirnoff vodka, that had a mixture of watermelon, cherry, and blue raspberry. It all turned out amazing, and tastes delicious! You don’t even need a chaser for these shots, they taste that good.
Paul, for your 34 oz Smirnoff mixture how many did u put of each of the 3 jolly rancher flavors? I would imagine some of the flavors might be stronger than others. Dying to try it!
so when you used the 1.75 liters of vodka you can make about 10 flasks?
Yeah, definitely! There’s no way I used more than half my 1.75 bottle on 5 flasks.
Definitely. The 1.75L bottle is around 59.xx ounces (basically 60 oz.), so that will yield you around 6oz. of vodka per bottle on top of the jolly ranchers, so it will fill nicely
I used more than half my bottle, but I also filled them all the way to the brim, not just the top of the neck.
Just tried it with Rum and shook up the bottles every time i remembered. They dissovled in around 8 hours and taste great!
I wonder what cinnamon Jolly Ranchers and vodka or rum would taste like??
I was wondering this before I even read the article. Has anyone tried this?
it tastes like a really sweet Hot Damn. i use 2 candys per oz and make it a Fifth at a time. Good stuff
Question If I buy a 1.75 liter of Absolute vodka. How many jolley ranchers do I have to use if I just want to use the whole 1.75 liter bottle….. And can I even do that or will it come out horrible?
i wouldn’t use absolute, its a waste of good vodka. ive tried absolute, sky, shernof, and mohawk, and the end results are about the same. the olny differnce i can see is with the grape and cherry. they tend to taste like cough med.
Hey guys,
I don’t have the availability to buy the flasks online can I use plastic water bottles that are emptied? Or any other suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks!
I would suggest an empty vodka bottle or 2
Cost Plus World Market and many hardware stores now have good bottle selections.
I used Mason Jars, they were realy cheap and make great glasses!
What’s a good vodka to use? Is smirnoff okay?
If you’re going to be drinking them straight, you need a good enough vodka that you could drink it straight. IMO, Smirnoff is not that smooth, but it’s okay for mixing, so I’d only use Smirnoff if you only plan on using these in cocktails. Svedka worked well!
Hey! This sounds great! I got a bottle of 375mL UV vodka and plan on trying this out. I was thinking of doing 2 flavors (watermelon and blueberry) but wasn’t quite sure how many jolly ranchers to use, sense i’m probably only going to be able to split them into two 6 oz containers. Any suggestions?
For 6 ounces, I’d probably use about 8-9 candies. Keep in mind, you can always add more later, or dilute it with leftover vodka if you use too many candies. But I think 8-9 should be about right.
I was just wondering which one is better, rum or voka? I’m plan on mixing some for a party this weekend and I just wanted to know from people who have tried it, which one taste better?
I tried it and for some reason I can’t taste the candies, but I can taste the hard liquor..
My guess is that you need to be accustomed to the taste of vodka to be able to taste the Jolly Ranchers. Otherwise the taste of the vodka will be so strong on your palate it will overpower the candy.
try 2 candys per oz
Just some feedback: They’re good, maybe the type of thing you would want to have one of at a party, but you could never drink enough of this to get drunk, it’s way too sweet.
Are those really the 8oz flasks listed on that website, or are they the 17oz flasks? Because those look a lot bigger than 8 oz.
Mine are definitely the 8 oz. The 17 oz ones are about as tall as the bottle of vodka in my pictures.
So I am planning to do this for a party this weekend and was wondering if using popov was a good or bad idea? and also if i could just put the jolly ranchers in the popov bottle itself?
Does making this with rum affect the color at all? Since rum is brown, i just wonder if it will look as pretty as it does with clear vodka. I’m trying to make some and give them away as birthday presents, so presentation kind of counts! Let me know, thank you
2 words: White rum.
Jenn, sure, you can put them straight in the bottle!
Elaine, if you use dark rum, it’ll definitely affect the color. But light rum is perfectly clear, and won’t affect it – it’ll look just like these.
So definately just made a test jar with a 5oz to see how it turns out lol wish me luck
Just read the grape/cherry comment about how it tastes like cough syrup, any other opinions?
I was just wondering if you could do this with Crown and Butterscotch disks to make a Misdemeaner flavored shot straight out of the bottle?
I just did this with 100 proof Smirnoff. It took a little over a day for 14 Jolly Ranchers to dissolve and it was very strong so I am adding 2 to 3 more to each one to try and get more candy flavor. I would recommend crushing them if using a higher proof vodka.
I’m using 5 16 oz containers instead, how much vodka do you think I should buy?
5×16=80
Buy 2 40′s
Source: Grade 3 math.
Can you use something other then vodka?
jollyrancher! sounds chocked full of calories but at the same time soo amazingly good! use voli lyte vodka it’ll lower down the calories.
Hey,
I’m a starving student, so price is a factor. Does anyone have some cheaper alternatives (buying a bunch of those flasks at 4 dollars each would add up) that don’t seem tacky (don’t want to use plastic water bottles or anything like that)
Thanks, look forward to trying this!!
mason jars! you can get them almost anywhere and they’re real cheap
Good idea. I’m a little unsure though, if there will be a spillage problem when pouring vodka out of a mason jar… don’t want to waste my precious creation!
Chris, just use a straw and there won’t be any spillage!
Haha, unfortunately most of the people I am giving these out to won’t be drinking it straight.
For anyone in the Toronto area (or Montreal) that is looking for cheap, amazing glass bottles check out http://en.consbottle.com/
Individual bottles range from 60cents to a dollar, plus around 15-20 cents for lids. I bought some nice glass bottles for a dollar each (if you want 12 it’s $7 for a case) and they are flattened on the front and back which leaves room for me to create a nifty label.
hey guys. for those of you having troubles with flavoring…
did you add 8 ounces of rum/vodka to a bottle filled with the candies,
or did you add rum/vodka to an 8 ounce bottle (or mason jar to the 8 ounce line)?
if you did the first one, you are using more alcohol than the recipe calls for, which might be why the flavors are not that prominent. the jolly ranchers take up a certain amount of space in her 8.5 ounce flasks, which means she is actually using less than 8 ounces of alcohol.
hope this helps!
so i have done the skittles one a few time and everytime the sugar seems to separate from the vodka and create a gross looking cloud in the bottle. i was wondering if the same thing happens with the jolly ranchers.
I’m making a mix tonight using 12 watermelon Jolly Ranchers & 9ozs of 151 proof (75.5%) Everclear. Will post results as soon as I try it. Woohoo!
Well, it’s almost 48hrs later & the Jolly Ranchers have yet to start dissolving.
I can only attribute it to the grain alcohol. I’m calling it a bust, don’t try it with Everclear. On to white rum now.
I only have Belvedre vodka, so don’t want to use that. Will pick up some cheaper vodka tomorrow.
Well, that’s interesting. Higher proof does not equal faster dissolving, I guess.
Brad, with the jolly ranchers it is still clear, not cloudy like with the skittles.
Those of you that have tried this, does the booze discolor your tongue? Or is it diluted enough not to have that problem? I just remember my friends and I would get very dark blue or purple tongues from these candies as kids.
I have another question…
I will be giving these gifts out to two differents sorts of people: one type will definitely be mixing it in cocktails, whereas one other person prefers his vodka straight.
My question is, should I change the ratio of ranchers to vodka depending on the intended use? Like I’m not sure if the guy drinking it straight will want less because it will either a) be too sweet or b) not have the same amount of “kick”, or if there is some reason the people putting it in cocktails would want more or less jolly ranchers…
All input greatly appreciated! (preferably from people that have tried this already)
1 cup of vodka. 12 cherry jolly ranchers. Sprite.
The best tasting drink I have yet to have! The adults Shirley temple
OMG, the sight of that many Jolly Ranchers makes my teeth hurt in the most delicious way possible XD
Friend did this recently, incredible!
Wow. Just did this with Absolut and Brach’s cinnamon disks. Puts Hot Damn to shame!! Can’t wait for the kids to go to bed…
What is the vodka/jolly rancher ratio? I am making red and green as christmas gifts and wanting to do like a mason jar full….
I just tried this experiment out for stocking stuffers. Only bought Burnettes (Sp.?), I didn’t want to spend a whole lot if this didn’t work out. Since buying a cheaper vodka I wanted to make sure the Jolly Rancher was pretty strong. So I used 21 Ranchers to 8ozs Vokda. Took a little longer for it to dissolve but turned out pretty good. I tired the Green Apple and that’s all you can taste, that and a little bite. I would do this again! With better Vodka of course.
Does anyone know if I’d be able to use this jolly rancher vodka to make jello shots? I think they’d turn out amazing, but I don’t know if it’s a bad idea to try it..any help?
These would sooooooo work for jello shots. It is just vodka with flavor. Would definitely enhance the flavor of your jello shots.
I make jello shots all the time and using different alcohols is a challenge, but these would work. You want it to taste good. It will.
If you haven’t yet, try making pudding shots!!
Delish!!!!!
Not alcohol related, but a friend of mine dissolved 1 or 2 “fruit slices” in their coffee and enjoyed it. Those gummy candies that look like multicolored orange slices covered in sugar.
For New Years Eve I bought Stoli Vodka and the original jolly rancher flavors along with the tropical flavors ( peach, strawberry, raspberry, fruit punch, and orange). I was thinking of mixing flavors together. Would this be a good idea, and if so, how many candies should I use, Or, would this be too sweet. Another Question… I already bought the Stoli because m boyfriend doesn’t like rum, but does the rum taste that much better with the jolly ranchers, or do you think that I am okay, Last question… If I do decide to mix flavors, for example ( strawberry and fruit punch) should I make these flavors separately and than add the vodkas together at the end, or should I start by mixing the jollly ranchers and starting the mixing process at the beginning. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this amazing recipe. Our five bottles are brewing & we can’t wait to share with friends on New Years Eve! Happy New Year Everyone!
This is the best “cocktail”…Loved it! thx!
